Hymns are congregational in nature, but that doesn’t mean that they are not very personal. When we sing together, we often sing about our personal experiences. Charles Wesley understood this better than anyone. While John Wesley (the founder of Methodism) gets a bit more name recognition, it is Charles that really provides a lasting legacy. Not many have read John Wesley’s “52 Standard Sermons”, but I know a lot of people that know the carol, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing.”
Charles Wesley wanted to teach theology through song. My hope as we look at some of the hymns of Charles Wesley over the next few weeks is that you not only learn something, but that you feel something personally. Each day we will look at one stanza (or verse of a hymn.) I may provide some background or details, but mostly I will share some of the scriptural or theological basis of what each stanza can teach us.
Week 1 - O For a Thousand Tongues to Sing
Week 2 - Jesus, Lover of my Soul
Week 3 - Christ the Lord is Risen Today
Week 4 - Depth of Mercy
Week 5 - And Can it Be
